For ships to go smoothly throughout the world, they need to be efficient and dependable. Large ships like LNG carriers require lots of electricity.  Two-stroke main engines are used in traditional marine propulsion. Shaft generators take care of electrical needs. They increase the power of the primary shaft propulsion. These technologies make it simpler to run a harbor and deal with crises. A shaft generator may turn the propeller by itself. This keeps the ship running even when the engines fail. Renewable energy and storage are part of modern designs. These let ships connect to electricity from the shore, which is better for the environment. Operators are forced to utilize more efficient technology because of rules.

Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator Efficiency Edge

PM shaft generators make it easier to use marine energy. They work better than induction or synchronous. Less power loss makes electricity generation more reliable. Under full and partial load, efficiency goes up. Induction generators lose more power in their rotors than PM generators do. Also, losses in the stator winding are lower. These systems don’t need any stimulation. This gets rid of losses in synchronous rotors that are energized from the outside. Their tiny size makes the most of the limited space in the engine room. Reducing weight makes a ship more stable and better at what it does. Maritime enterprises spend less on fuel and running costs. Targets for reducing emissions are more likely to be met as efficiency improves.

Big companies are using it and getting orders from all around the world.

Shipping swiftly adopts the technology of PM shaft generators. In 2024, a big LNG fleet put these things in place. Samsung Heavy Industries bought 15 LNG ships. Each carrier can carry 174,000 cbm. Deliveries are expected between 2026 and 2028. SHI’s largest project is to make LNG. ABB also got big orders for 2025. These were 18 Chinese shipbuilding systems. Twelve machines were also acquired for Korean manufacturers. Delivery of the system will go on until 2030. ABB has set up more than 160 cargo ships. All four of the biggest companies that move containers utilize them. People are confident since a lot of people use technology.

Advantages of Operations Cutting Costs

PM shaft generators make operations more efficient. Reduced energy losses limit fuel consumption.  Every year, this saves a lot of money on running expenses. Using less gasoline might cut CO₂ emissions by a lot. A simpler mechanical design means less maintenance. Generators should have fewer moving components. This makes the vessel more available and has less downtime. With hybrid propulsion, you can change how you manage energy. It makes the switch from mechanical to electric power smoother. Space savings make it possible to store freight or operational equipment. This increases the lifetime revenue of the vessel. The system makes more money and lasts longer.

Benefits of following environmental and regulatory rules

Environmental rules say that shipowners must cut down on emissions by a lot. PM shaft generators help with international compliance. The IMO has tight rules on how energy-efficient ships must be. Cutting down on fuel consumption lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid integration helps both renewable and alternative fuel technologies. Shore-to-ship power makes port stays cleaner. It meets the port authority’s requirements for berthing without emissions. It’s simple to do green retrofits if they work with energy storage. Operators may easily add battery or hydrogen systems to their operations. Lowering emissions from operations helps people earn carbon credits. Operators that embrace earlier are ahead of environmental rules.

Reduces the risk of costly operational retrofits

The future of marine power generation looks bright. The technology behind PM shaft generators will become better. Power density will go up thanks to material advancements. Better cooling will let you carry more weight. Integration with AI-based energy management makes things work better. Reliable power will help boats that can steer themselves. Using more LNG and other fuels will assist. The markets for containers and tankers will increase. Shipbuilders looking for an edge will make demand go up. Upgrading old ships will improve the outlook for the whole world. Supply chain resilience will help long-term adoption. This technology helps shipping move into the digital age and become more environmentally friendly.
